Macalla is the Irish word for echo. It is a beautiful word, and seemed very fitting as the name for my digital delay pedal.
The Macalla is a nicely-voiced delay; not noisy, clean but not sterile, the dry signal stays clear and true, but the repeats have an adjustable high-end roll-off. A Short/Long toggle switch selects the range of the Time knob; 10-300ms for precise setting of shorter delays and slap-backs, or 300-600ms for cascading waves. (Min/max delay times are approximate.)
The Clarity knob adjusts the amount of high frequencies removed from each repeat. (The original signal in unaffected.) To your ears, this simulates the reflective properties of your surroundings. An empty room with hard, flat surfaces would give very clear echoes with the highs intact. Add some carpeting and soft furniture to that room and the echoes begin to lose high end with each repeat. The echo you hear by yelling "Hello!" in a vast canyon has a very dull sound, with much of the highs being lost.
When you hear an echo in nature, your brain does a complex equation of the time between repeats, number of repeats, reflected frequencies, and volume loss, and gives you a mental picture of your surroundings. The interaction of the Time, Repeats, Clarity, and Mix knobs on the Macalla can give your guitar sound the illusion of being practically anywhere.
